Demo: JazzSpace: Workspace
for Collaborative Sense-making using Spatial Arrangements of Objects

Abstract:
When dealing with a collection of entities, it is often crucial to understand
the various ways in which different entities are related with each other.
However, extracting and specifying the underlying relationships can be
quite tedious and complex when dealing with large collections. One approach
to deal with this complexity is to infer possible relationships amongst
objects from the manner in which they are laid out spatially. JazzSpace
is a tool for working with a large collection of objects. It can act as
a shared workspace amongst multiple people working together remotely to
synchronously create, organize and manipulate objects in a collection.
JazzSpace provides panning and zooming capabilities for managing the large
workspace. Groupings of objects are dynamically inferred based on various
common spatial arrangements (e.g. alignment, piling etc.) as objects are
created, manipulated and organized within the workspace. These groupings
can then be used for collective manipulation of the group as a whole.
The groupings indicate possible relationships amongst objects which can
aid in various sense-making activities. Dynamically recognizing the spatial
relationships removes the burden from the users of explicitly creating
and specifying various groups, and allows them to concentrate on the more
important task of organizing the objects in meaningful ways.
