Student Updates

Benjamin Koehne (D. Redmiles, advisor) spent his summer as an intern at Google in New York City, NY working for the Google Drive Team. Koehne worked with designers, developers, and project managers to evaluate new versions of Google Apps for desktop and mobile platforms at Google’s own UX lab.

Xinning Gui (B. Nardi, advisor) spent her summer conducting field studies on determining how information and communication technologies (ICTs) are used to support ‘Transition Towns’ transition from vulnerability to resilience in the Transition Towns Bristol and Totnes in the UK.

Nicholas Lopez (A. van der Hoek, advisor) interned last summer at Google, Irvine where he developed features and infrastructure for the Analystics API project. He also presented his paper “Using Topic Models to Understand Evolution of a Software Ecosystem” at the Doctoral Symposium at the 9th Joint Meeting of the European Software Engineering Conference and the ACM SIGSOFT Int’l Symposium on the Foundations of Software Engineering (ESEC/FSE) held in St. Petersburg, Russia in August.

Francisco Servant (J. Jones, advisor) presented his paper “Supporting Bug Investigation using History Analysis” at the Doctoral Symposium at the 28th IEEE/ACM Int’l Conference on Automated Software Engineering held in the Silicon Valley in Nov. He also presented his paper “Chronos: Visualizing Slices of Source-Code History”, co-authored by his advisor James A. Jones, at the 1st IEEE Working Conf.on Software Visualization, Tool Track, in Eindhoven, Netherlands, in September.

Oliver Yi Wang (D. Redmiles advisor) spent his summer as an intern at IBM T.J. Watson Research Center in NY working for the Software Governance Team.

Eugenia Gabrielova (C. Lopes, advisor) is spending her summer at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory on the Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) team as a Computation Research intern. ESGF is an open source data distribution and computation infrastructure for Peta/Exa-scale earth system science data.

Bart Knijnenburg (A. Kobsa, advisor), has been awarded one of only 39 Google Ph.D. fellowships awarded this year; this global program supports outstanding graduate students pursuing work in computer science, related disciplines, or promising research areas. Read more about it in this UCI feature story. Knijnenburg also presented his paper “Preference-based Location Sharing: Are More Privacy Options Really Better?” at the ACM SIGCHI Conf. on Human Factors in Computing, held in Paris, France. The paper was co-authored by his advisor, Alfred Kobsa, and Hongxia Jin of Samsung.

Xinru Page’s (A. Kobsa, advisor) paper “FYI: Communication Style Preferences Underlie Differences in Location-Sharing Adoption and Usage” has been accepted to the Int’l Joint Conf. on Pervasive and Ubiquitous Computing (Ubicomp) to be held in Zurich, Switzerland in Sept. The paper is co-authored by Ph.D. student Bart Knijnenburg and their advisor Alfred Kobsa.

Leyna Zimdars (R. Taylor, advisor) gave an invited talk “Developing Requirements using a Twin Peaks Paradigm: A Practitioner’s Perspective” at the TwinPeaks workshop held at ICSE 2013 in San Francisco in May. Zimdars received her Ph.D. in June.

Oliver Yi Wang (D. Redmiles, advisor) presented his paper “Understanding Cheap Talk and the Emergence of Trust in Global Software Engineering: An Evolutionary Game Theory Perspective” at the 6th Int’l Workshop on Cooperative and Human Aspects of Software Engineering (CHASE) at ICSE 2013 in San Francisco in May. The paper was co-authored by his advisor David Redmiles.

Maryam Khademi (C. Lopes, advisor) presented her paper “Comparing ‘Pick and Place’ task in Spatial Augmented Reality versus Virtual Reality for Rehabilitation Setting” at the 35th Int’l Conf. of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society in Osaka, Japan in July. The paper was co-authored by Hossein Mousavi, UCI Neurology, Lucy Dodakian, UCI Occupational Therapy, Steven Cramer, UCI Neurology, and her advisor Cristina Lopes.

Mingming Fan (C. Lopes, advisor) is spending the summer as an intern at the FX Palo Alto Laboratory (FXPAL) where he is working on multi-device control and gesture control system design.
