Software Architecture-based Development of Product Lines for the Software-Defined Radio Domain

Speakers: Richard N. Taylor, UCI/ISR; Eric Dashofy, UCI/ISR; Haig Krikorian, The Boeing Company, Anaheim and Claremont University ; Michael J. Marich, The Boeing Company, Anaheim and Claremont University

Abstract: This presentation highlights the activities performed as part of a UCI/Boeing joint research project. This project includes the development and maturation of an architecture description language (ADL) and its environment to capture product line variants. Research is currently being done to determine if xADL (an XML-based ADL) and ArchStudio (an open-source, software architecture-based development environment) adds value to the development of system architectures and its variants. To date, the research team has discovered lessons learned with respect to partnership, product, and domain.

Bio:

Richard N. Taylor is a Professor of Information and Computer Science at the University of California at Irvine, and Chair of the Department of Informatics. He received the Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1980. His research interests are centered on software architectures, especially event-based and peer-to-peer systems and the way they scale across organizational boundaries. Professor Taylor is the Director of the Institute for Software Research, which is dedicated to fostering innovative basic and applied research in software and information technologies through partnerships with industry and government. He has served as chairman of ACM's Special Interest Group on Software Engineering, SIGSOFT, as chairman of the steering committee for the International Conference on Software Engineering, and was general chair of the 1999 International Joint Conference on Work Activities, Coordination, and Collaboration. Taylor was a 1985 recipient of a Presidential Young Investigator Award and in 1998 was recognized as an ACM Fellow.

Bio:

Eric Dashofy is a PhD student in the Institute for Software Research at the University of California, Irvine.  His advisor is Richard Taylor. He plans to graduate someday.
