Understanding Multi-tasking Work Environments: Cooperation with a Financial Services Company

Presenter: Gloria Mark and Eric Smith, State Street

Abstract:

Bio: Gloria Mark is Assistant Professor in the Department of Informatics, School of Information and Computer Science at the University of California, Irvine. Her research focuses on the design and evaluation of collaborative systems. Her primary research interest is in developing and evaluating technologies to improve virtual collocation. Her current projects include studying technology use and group-to-group collaboration in space mission design, virtually collocated teams at Intel, and collaborative technology adoption in large distributed organizations. She also runs a groupware usability lab where she conducts experiments. She has examined the usability of a number of leading edge collaborative technologies including a collaborative hypermedia authoring system, an electronic shared workspace, application-sharing, and collaborative virtual environments.

Bio: Eric Smith is an Assistant Vice-President in the IMS West Information Technology Group at State Street. He manages the PIMCO Systems team which handles all trading volume for PIMCO, a leading securities investment manager. Eric and his team are developing an innovative straight-through-processing (STP) trade flow application that is a unique automated trading system in the securities industry. Eric received a B.S. in Information and Computer Science from UCI in 1996. He also serves on the ICS Leadership council and as the Vice President of Communications for the ICS Alumni Organization.
