Alfonso Fuggetta graduated from Politecnico di Milano in 1982.  He worked for a software consulting company from 1980 to 1988, when he joined CEFRIEL as a senior researcher. CEFRIEL is a innovation center, established in 1988 by Politecnico di Milano, other universities, and private companies to support cooperation and technology transfer in the ICT sector.

In 1992, he took a position as Associate Professor (with tenure) at Politecnico di Milano. In 2000, he was promoted to Full Professor and to Deputy Director of CEFRIEL. In 2003, he was appointed Scientific Director of CEFRIEL and in 2005, CEO.

He has been a member of several committees of the Italian Government including the Government Committee on Open Source Software in the Public Administration. He is also member of the Research Committee of Confindustria, the Italian Industrial Association. Fuggetta was a member of several programme committees for international conferences and of editorial boards of scientific journals. In particular, he was Programme Co-Chair of ICSE 97, the International Conference on Software Engineering held in Boston in 1997. He was also member of the editorial board of the ACM Transactions on Software Engineering and Methodology (ACM TOSEM).

In 1997 and 1998, he was in the top ten list of scholars in the field of software and system engineering, published yearly by the Journal of Systems and Software. In 1997, he was 9th worldwide and 2nd in Europe. In 1998, he was still 9th worldwide and 1st in Europe.
