People, Devices, States: Some Naming Problems in Presence and Instant Messaging
Mark Day, Lotus

Abstract:

In considering internet-scale presence and instant messaging, some of the most challenging aspects of naming have little to do with scale per se. They are instead driven by the need to present names so that they serve as good "user interfaces." I describe some of the challenges related to naming people, those people's devices, and the presence states those people want to reveal to each other.
