Ariadne: Navigating the Maze of Dependencies

Student: Cleidson de Souza, UCI/ISR

Collaborators: Stephen Quirk, UCI/ISR and Erik Trainer, UCI/ISR

Advisor: David F. Redmiles, UCI/ISR

Abstract: In this poster, we will present Ariadne, a Java tool for the Eclipse IDE, that links technical and task dependencies. Ariadne is based on the observation that technical dependencies among software components create task dependencies among the software developers implementing these components. We describe our approach for creating technical, socio-technical and social dependencies from a software project. Finally, we describe possible uses of our approach and tool.

Cleidson R. B. de Souza is a Ph.D. candidate at the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences, University of California, Irvine. He received his Masters of Science Degree at State University of Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil and another one at University of California, Irvine. He has conducted empirical studies of collaborative software development teams at NASA and IBM Research.

Bio:

Stephen Quirk is a Bachelor of Science student studying Information and Computer Science in the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences at the University of California, Irvine.  In Fall of 2005, Stephen will enter UC Irvine's graduate school in the Department of Informatics as one of Prof. David Redmiles' Ph.D. students.  As part of his undergraduate research, Stephen co-developed a plug-in for the popular Eclipse Integrated Development Environment to visualize the social dependencies between developers of a software project.  Through his research, Stephen received grants from UC Irvine's Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) and IBM's Eclipse Innovation Grant program.  Stephen's general research interests include computer-supported cooperative work and human-computer interaction.
