An Overview of UML 2.0

H5: An Overview of UML 2.0

Sunday, May 21, 2006 - Morning

Instructor

Bran Selic, IBM Rational and Carleton University

Abstract

The first major revision of the UML standard, UML 2, was adopted recently by the Object Management Group (OMG). In contrast to the original version of UML, which was intended primarily as an informal documentation tool, UML 2 also supports model-driven development (MDD). This is an approach to software design and development in which the focus shifts from programs to models. This tutorial describes all the major new characteristics of UML 2, with particular emphasis on the internals of the language definition which reflect the increased semantic precision necessary to support MDD. All the important new features and capabilities of UML 2 are covered, with a full explanation given of the rationale and design philosophy behind each of them. The presenter was directly involved in the definition of UML 2.0 and is currently chair of the OMG task force responsible for maintaining the standard.

Biography

Bran Selic is an IBM Distinguished Engineer at IBM Rational and an Adjunct Professor of computer science at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. He has close to 40 years of experience in designing and implementing large-scale industrial software systems. As one of the co-founders of ObjecTime Limited, a company that developed design tools for real-time and embedded applications, Bran pioneered the application of model-driven development methods in this domain. At present, he is on the CTO team at IBM's Rational Software brand and is also chairing the OMG team responsible for the UML 2 standard.
