What Happened to the X.500 Directory?

  • The web happened:

    end-users use browsers to view HTML;
    use search engines or www.<entity> to find things
    bigfoot, et al, provide single-point contact-info lookup;

  • Civil naming hasn't happened (yet?)

    just the reverse: "amazon.com" is corporate name;
    even in DNS, national registries less used than "dot com"

  • Corporate directory exposure a security problem

    "LDAP doesn't go through the firewall"

  • Institutional white pages don't need complex DS

    CSO, Whois, simple web have been easy, OK

  • National, corporate deployment still happening ...
