Abstract: There have been few studies of expertise in software engineering. What is the range of knowledge and skills involved? What is a good empirical test for expertise? We have conducted an initial laboratory study of problem solving and communication strategies in novice and expert software engineers. We found that expertise is a continuum rather than a dichotomy. Experts in our study were more likely to use a systematic strategy when seeking information from a software system. They were also more likely to present explanations that are organized, principled and span multiple level of abstraction.
